Photos: SUPER COMBO at chashama ABC Gallery in NYC.

Collaboration was the name of the game at SUPER COMBO, a street art-themed show that opened at chashama ABC Gallery this past Friday evening. There were collaborative paintings, collaborative sticker collages, collaborative posters - and, most interestingly, various “involuntary” collaborations that incorporated lots of found object (namely, other people’s art). This included a remixed Anthony Goicolea print (originally found in a dumpster in Brooklyn) and a gallery floor that was constructed entirely out of found paintings by Evelyn Metzger. One of my favorite touches - besides the floor panel I got to tag - was the price list, which was laid out like a Chinese restaurant menu (a tribute to Abe Lincoln Jr., the mad genius behind Taqueria Pendejo).
The show is up ’til April 25th. Don’t miss it.

The floors of the gallery space were covered in found painted panels by Evelyn Metzger, a prodigious painter who used spray paint in the ’60s - well before it had become a common graffiti implement. Some of the paintings on the floor of the gallery space were altered, others were left as is.

A found print by Anthony Goicolea, remixed by various members of the Endless Love Crew & Friends: Gore-B, Darkcloud, Deeker, infinity, Celso, Anera and Meeka. This is #2 in a series of altered Goicolea prints.

Sleepyz Customz kicks worked nicely with a painting from Evelyn Metzger’s splatter phase.

Floor collaborations: infinity redoes Evelyn Metzger.

Winding down after a long night.

Not a part of the show, but intriguing nonetheless: a piece of art I saw at the check-cashing place next door to the gallery. Curators take note: this is the kind of stuff I’d like to see in the next Whitney Biennial. See the video.

Somehow, at the end of the night, we ended up with the Biffs and Muffys at the National Arts Club. Talking about going from low to high.

[…] Elsewhere in the East Village, I met Celso, a street artist with a taste for experimentation, a knack for making things happen and a predilection for drawing colorful naked women. He guided me through the Super Combo show at Chashama ABC Gallery on Avenue C, which he curated. It was a mixed bag of collaborative work that featured a long list of established and emerging talents, including Shepard Fairey, Skewville, Infinity, Dark Cloud, Abe Lincoln Jr, Gaia, DAVe, Elbowtoe, Deeker and Celso, many of whom are members of the Endless Love Crew.
